TECH TIP: Using QR Codes

What is a QR Code?

QR codes allow you to access an internet page (URL) without having to type in its name. These codes have become increasingly popular to serve as quick links for landing pages, such as menus on restaurant sites, registration links, and programs for events. Using these codes give companies a verity of benefits:

  • Save on printing costs (and thus reduce waste),
  • Ability to make last-minute changes to their information,
  • Share information in a contact-free manner.

QR code users benefit too since there’s no need to carry or keep paper flyers and no need to remember or type a long URL. Your phone does the work for you!

Apple introduced QR code support in 2017. Google introduced QR code support in 2018. (Every iPhone running iOS 11 or later can scan a QR code directly from the camera app. In addition, most, but not all, phones running Android 9 or later can scan QR codes from the camera app.)

Here’s how to access any QR Code you come across:

  1. Make sure you’re connected to the internet (since your goal is to visit a URL.)
  2. Open the camera app as if you were going to take a picture.
  3. Hover your phone as if to take a picture of the QR code, but do not click on your camera button
  4. As you hold your phone steady for a couple of seconds, you’ll see a square notification on the screen.
  5. Tap the notification that pops up to open the link.
  6. You are now on a new web page/URL.
