The urgent need for food is what brings nearly 200 families each week to our food shelf. Hunger is linked to poverty, underemployment and other challenges that put families in crisis. Long-term stability means we have to not only address the symptom, but attack hunger at its root causes.
This was true for Elijah, a single adult living in Plymouth trying to rebuild his life after experiencing homelessness and underemployment, which put him at risk for food insecurity.
After working with the Interfaith Employment Services team, Elijah was able to get hired at one of the largest food service distributors in America. “I was actually offered two jobs,” Elijah says with a confident smile. “I said no to the other one. In five years, I would like to still be [at this job].”
He told us that now that he has a steady, living-wage job, is paying down his debt, and has a plan in place to move forward. He was also able to find a permanent place to live. We honor Elijah’s perseverance and are thrilled for this victory!
