TECH TIP: Do’s and Don’ts on Creating an ATS-friendly Resume

An ATS-friendly resume is designed to be easily read and reviewed by applicant tracking systems (ATS). Follow these tips for success.

DO: Simple for the win!

  • Use a simple, clean format – Stick to standard layouts with clear section headings (e.g., Experience, Education, Skills).
  • Use consistent date formatting – Choose one format and use it throughout (e.g., 09/2020 or Sept. 2025). Avoid mixing formats like Semester 9, 2025, 2025 Sept, or 09/25.
  • Use standard fonts – Recommended fonts include Calibri, Times New Roman, or Arial for readability and compatibility.
  • Incorporate relevant keywords – Pull key phrases directly from the job posting to boost your chances with the system.

DON’T: Avoid these common mistakes

  • Use a columns, graphics, tables, or text boxes – These elements often confuse ATS software and may cause your content to be skipped.
  • Using only acronyms or vague titles – Spell out job titles and certifications in addition to acronyms (e.g., Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)).
  • Inconsistent formatting – Mismatched fonts, spacing, and alignment can make your resume look unprofessional and confuse the system.
  • Over-stylized fonts – Avoid decorative or unusual fonts that may not be readable by ATS programs.

Use ChatGPT to optimize your resume for ATS.

Try prompts like:

  • “Act as an ATS resume expert. Help me create an ATS resume template for a [Job Title] position.”
  • “Act as an ATS resume expert and give feedback on my resume for a [Job Title]. Make sure it follows ATS guidelines and includes the right keywords from this job posting: [paste job posting].”

Please note that ChatGPT is a tool and resume content it provides should always be reviewed and edited by the jobseeker to ensure it accurately reflects their experience.
