April’s Story: Helping a Nurse Get Back on Her Feet 

“It was like, ‘okay, do I starve my family or do I pay my electric bill?’ And I put food in the house. It’s just the adult decision to [make],” Interfaith client April explains.

Having to choose one need over another is unfortunately common for many clients like April. She had to leave her nursing job due to a back injury. As the top earner in her household of four, this was a hard hit financially – and mentally.

“All of a sudden losing my job…it was absolutely heart-wrenching,” she confides. “My biggest fear amongst it was just feeling judgment of not having a job or struggling to find a job.”

April was referred to IOCP through a contact at the Orono Public School District who was helping her find business apparel for her teen daughter’s participation in Youth and Government.

“That’s kind of what got the ball rolling…Then [the contact] mentioned the employment services, then [the employment services team] introduced me to the food shelf, and then [we] just kind of went from there.”

April partnered with the employment services team to update her resume and find a healthcare job that took her experience and physical state into consideration. She also visited the food shelf and received emergency financial assistance for vehicle repairs that allowed her to get to work, activities, and appointments.

After a few months, April was hired for an operations coordinator role at a Twin Cities children’s hospital.

“I love my job,” she beams, pointing out its contrast to the 14 years she worked in nursing homes. “It’s the beginning of life versus the end of life.”

April says she’s grateful for being made aware of the opportunities at IOCP and to have the variety of programs and services available.

“I don’t know what we would’ve done if you guys were not around. The ability for me to make income so that I can keep supporting my family was beneficial to my mental health.”

“Nobody looks to be in these types of situations,” she adds.
